Memorable Beers ($1.99) by Peters Kimmerly Design Associates provides a quick, pain free way to log a good pint after work.

Are you having a beer that’s absolutely fantastic, making you lose all the pains of the world in its frothy head? Memorable Beers is the perfect place to slap down a quick review of it.

Memorable Beers by Peters Kimmerly Design Associates screenshot

Memorable Beers is essentially a convenience app, helping you catalog and track your drinking experiences. As stated, the app is designed to make it lightening quick to jot down a note about a new beer, or any old mainstay back at the pub.

Using contextual menus and easy-check plugs, users can very rapidly provide the app with vital information about the brew, including the beer’s label, brewer, style, weight, and origin. All of these points are presented in either a quickly filled menu item, or via a list of boxes to be checked off.

Once a beer has been entered, users can add further notes to detail the experience. These include text footnotes (in case the beer needs an epilogue) more specific location tags, and even audio memos. Obviously, this has quite the potential for recording drunken bar talk. To top it all off, users can even snap a picture of their new favorite brew, attaching the photo straight to their note from the camera roll.

Memorable Beers by Peters Kimmerly Design Associates screenshot

All in all, Memorable Beers does make it ridiculously easy to record a new miracle beer. Having a sleek way to save drinking experiences is convenient, while the included filter functions were particularly nice. Likewise, having the ability to search previous logs by type and weight is both practical and useful.

That being said, the real value of Memorable Beers is quite debatable. The app provides a quick, painless way to record drinking experiences, but it doesn’t necessarily bring anything to the table that Notes doesn’t already.

True, the package is certainly streamlined, and the menus make data entry a breeze: But for taking quick notes about a beer at the pub, a more simplistic text editor for iOS could easily perform the same job, though perhaps not as attractively.

What Memorable Beers does offer that Notes doesn’t is the ability to Tweet or email a new post, or even save it to Tumblr and Facebook. This level of social networking integration adds an amount of usefulness to the app that will most appeal to those who like to talk about their beers online.

Still, I would have liked to see the app integrated with a service like Evernote. By backing up articles to a cloud-based service, Memorable Beers could simultaneously provide a quick way to restore lost data and view beer notes via traditional desktop computing.

At the end of the day, though, Memorable Beers certainly offers enough features and a smooth enough interface to please the iPhone-sporting beer fanatic in us all.

If you like to talk about the microbrews offered down the street, or your homemade ales that have aged nicely, Memorable Beers is a steal. The app is currently free in the App Store as part of a launch sale, meaning there’s no reason not to taste it.

  • Gravity Lab! Is The Best Physics Puzzler Since Angry Birds

Gravity Lab! Is The Best Physics Puzzler Since Angry Birds

Gravity Lab! by Mobile Snap, LLC icon

Gravity Lab! ($0.99) by Mobile Snap, LLC is a breath of fresh air in the plus-sized realm of physics puzzlers for iOS.

The game brings new innovations to an overplayed genre. With fantastic 3D graphics, challenging puzzles, and a unique game mechanic, Gravity Lab! is a worthy successor to Angry Birds’ throne on the genre.

Gravity Lab! by Mobile Snap, LLC screenshot

Like the aforementioned avian-themed app, Gravity Lab! has you flinging the game’s protagonist at various obstacles. Unlike Angry Birds, however, the app is much more gravity-based, and offers a unique approach to the tried and true slingshot mechanic.

Gravity Lab!’s main character, Steve the Robot, is charged with collecting stars, which are situated creatively among 75 different gravity lab puzzles.

In order to collect them, he’ll need to be shot into various boxes, knocking them over and into the stars. He himself cannot hit the golden points, or he’ll bounce off. This means the player must arrange complex chain reactions with pinball like accuracy to pass each level.

This task is made all the more difficult by several clever additions to the concept. For instance, the boxes themselves come in several different colors, each hue indicating which direction the box will float in once knocked. Likewise, there are also bomb crates, bouncing pads, directional rectangles, and portals to contend with.

In essence, the player will need to leverage the direction the boxes will float in, as well as how they’ll shoot Steve to begin with, to conquer the level and collect all three stars.

Gravity Lab! by Mobile Snap, LLC screenshot

All in all, it’s tough work that provides quite the challenge. Gravity Lab’s difficulty is obscured by an absolutely lovely 3D graphics set. It’s strange to be so puzzled by a level that features such cute animations.

Gravity Lab! does its best to keep things interesting, adding new game elements at a comfortably enticing pace. That being said, the gameplay can become repetitive at times, simply because the same objects are often used throughout an entire lab, or set of puzzles.

The developers have largely spiced things up by adding Game Center achievements, as well as three different labs that must be unlocked. The strength of the level design itself also keeps things fresh, as the puzzles can indeed be quite difficult.

Another point in Gravity Lab!’s favor is the sheer number of levels: As mentioned, there are 75 unique gravity-based challenges to be worked through, creating the potential for a very large amount of playtime. The developers have also promised that more levels (as well as more in-game objects) will arrive with future updates.

At the end of the day, it really is hard to find much wrong with Gravity Lab!. The app is one of the most unique and inventive new titles to appear in the App Store, and the price can hardly be argued with — Gravity Lab! clocks in at $0.99.

Love Retro Arcade Games? Give Megablast A Try!

    Megablast by MamaGaming Ltd icon

Megablast ($0.99) by MamaGaming Ltd is an arcade shooter for the iPhone that will keep you on your toes. With beautiful graphics and fast-paced gameplay, this game will be enjoyable for an unlimited amount of time.

    Megablast by MamaGaming Ltd screenshot

It was a bit difficult for me to get the hang of this game initially. I kept losing before I barely began. I came to notice that when you destroy all of the balls on the screen — and there aren’t any more spawning — you lose. Game over. So, do your best to keep shooting them so they multiply and keep you in business.

There are three modes that you can choose from: sprint, arcade, and dodge. These are pretty self-explanatory, but for those of you who aren’t very game-familiar I will give you a brief rundown.

Play in sprint mode to get the best score in a minute. Arcade mode is all about how long you can last. Dodge mode is about avoiding objects and outlasting your surroundings.

To shoot the things in your path, just tap the bottom right side of the screen. You can control the path of your spaceship one of two ways (you choose). You can play in tilt mode or go retro style with joystick mode. I find the joystick awkward. When given the choice of utilizing the accelerometer, I will almost always choose it. This game is no different; tilt controls work perfectly.

There are many power ups to collect, turbo boosts and time additions, but beware the ball with the skull on it. Because, you know, typically a skull equals death and that is definitely the case here.

There are unlimited levels and Game Center support with many achievements. You can even share your score on Facebook.

    Megablast by MamaGaming Ltd screenshot

The only issue I had with the app was some minor lag when pressing a button to advance to the next screen.

Megablast is in the App Store for $0.99, so if you love arcade shooters, you may want to give it a go. I found it pretty difficult to master and was a bit annoyed by the minor lag, but overall it was well done.

Three, Two, One … Zero – Todo List!

Zero - Todo List by Functional Delights LLC icon

Zero – Todo List (Free) by Functional Delights LLC is a really simple and efficient to do list app for your iPhone. This is one of the sleekest and most efficient to-do apps I’ve used.

Zero - Todo List by Functional Delights LLC screenshot

I know, I know. Another to-do list app. But if you’re like me, you’re always open to new — and pretty! — productivity apps to add to your collection. And, in that rare moment that you are lucky and find something great, you will replace some of your other productivity apps with a new, shiny one.

It’s as easy as two taps (or three steps): tap the “enter a new task” box, type in your task, and hit save. Done. And if you need to rearrange the display order of your tasks, it’s as simple as clicking and dragging.

One of the best things about this app is notes. You can add endless notations to each task if you need to, so that you never forget the additional information. But, on the other hand, you don’t have to add anything extra at all if you prefer to keep it simple.

Zero also has reminders in the form of notifications and badges. And if it is synced with the calendar on your computer (pro version only), it will remind you there, too.

Zero - Todo List by Functional Delights LLC screenshot

This to-do list app is free in the App Store, but it does come with ads. No one likes ads though (they make me cringe). To remove them, you can currently upgrade to the pro version with an in-app purchase of $3.99. This is a limited time offer as the price will go up eventually, so if you do decide to upgrade, now would be the time to do it.

To me, that isn’t too bad for syncing capabilities and ad removal. I don’t see any information on other features the pro version includes, though, so I suppose that’s it. But you decide if you think it’s worth it: give the free version a test run and let us know what you think!

  • Quirky App Of The Day: Doodle Logics

Quirky App Of The Day: Doodle Logics

    Cabbage, Sheep And Wolf

I like mind games. Not the kind that teenage girls play on each other. Those are mind nuclear wars. I mean the kind of games that are riddles and puzzles to think through. I have little better to do with my time than to just sit and think, so this type of app is in keeping with my lifestyle. Doodle Logics is an app that provides two scenarios for you to think your way through. Hopefully, they develop more in the near future.

The first teaser is about a cabbage, a sheep and a wolf. This sounds like a horrible joke you tell when everyone is good and drunk. The point is to get all three across the river without anything getting eaten. Obviously, you want to prevent the wolf from becoming vegetarian and eating the cabbage and the cabbage from making a grisly scene by eating the sheep. I kid. The wolf eats the sheep and the sheep eats the cabbage. They only eat as soon as the man in the boat leaves. The rest of it is up to you.

The second game is a lot more interesting in premise.

    Missionaries And Cannibals

You have to move the cannibals and the missionaries to the opposite side of the river. It must be “Take Your Party Across The River” day or something. The missionaries have quite the motivation to stick together though. Anytime there are more cannibals than missionaries, the cannibals make a buffet out of them. I personally have nothing against missionaries. They’re pretty cool people for what they do. So, I try to be responsible and make sure that they aren’t turned into a sacred snack.

There are only these two mind teasers, but the app is free. So, there’s no harm in trying it for the few minutes of enjoyment it will provide. I would love to see more of these teasers though. I loved the art. I’m  a known sucker for doodled things. I’ll be happy to keep this game for the future updates and new games.

Doodle Logics is available on the App Store for the awesome price of FREE!
